ivanhoe

WHAT´S IT CALLED? WHO´S IT BY? WHAT KIND OF BOOK IS IT?

The book is called ‘Ivanhoe’. It was written by Sir Walter Scott.
It’s an adventure and fiction book. But it is based on real events
as King Richard I (Coeur de Lion), the fight between the Saxons and Normans and the Christian armies on a Crusade against the Saracens in Palestine.

WHAT´S IT ABOUT?

In England during the twelfth century:
King Richard had been fighting in Palestine and he had returned to England. The Saxon Knight Ivanhoe who was a member of the English army under King Richard had returned too. Ivanhoe had been disinherited by his father Cedric, a noble Saxon, because he loved Lady Rowena, a pretty woman who descended from the old Saxon Kings. Some Norman Knight Templars as Guilbert, Front-de-Boeuf... had returned from the crusade too. There were big problems in England so King Richard and Ivanhoe covered up their face and then they were the Black Knight and Palmer or the Disinherited Knight. While Prince John, King Richard’s brother was planning with other Norman how to replace his brother in the England throne.
On the other hand Ivanhoe defeated all Norman champions in the Ashby tournament and he discovered his face, but he is wounded and Rebecca, the daughter of a rich Jew cured him and she fell in love with him.
Prince John wanted to marry Lady Rowena and De Bracy, a noble Norman, so his men wore the green clothes of an outlaw and they attacked and captured the Saxons (Cedric, Rowena, Ivanhoe, Rebecca and her father...) in a castle. Locksley, a famous archer, his men of Sherwood Forest and the Black Knight rescued the Saxons. But Guilbert, the Templar fell in love with Rebecca and she was accused of being a witch and bewitched Guilbert to save Rebecca from the castle by the Order of Templars. Ivanhoe combated against Guilbert to save Rebecca. But during the combat Guilbert died without any wound because God killed him.
Finally the Black Knight shows his face and all the people discover that he is King Richard. He wants Locksley to serve him and Locksley o Robin Hood accepts. Cedric approves Lady Rowena and Ivanhoe marriage. Rebecca and her father leave to Spain. Ivanhoe and Rowena are very happy, but Ivanhoe remembered Rebecca too many times.

WHAT DID YOU THINK OF IT? WHY?

It’s a novel, which I have seen as a film and I have read some books in many different versions, but all of them are based on the history. The characters and the story are known to me. I liked the book because I like history novels.
In this book there are a lot of topics as love, friendship, magic, honour, bravery... that makes the story more pleasant.
Above all it has got a good end.
But it was more difficult to read than other books because there were a lot of new words and expressions and some of them aren’t used nowadays.
Moreover I liked it a lot because Robin Hood, Ivanhoe, King Richard... were heroes that I like to read about, although some things are true and most of them are false.
